WEATHER UPDATE FOR BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 20 DECEMBER 2023

20 Dec 2023

1. General Weather Situation
Brunei Darussalam is currently in the Northeast Monsoon and is expected until around end of March 2024. During the first two months of Northeast Monsoon (December 2023 and January 2024), also known as the rainy season, are the months that normally received the highest amount of rainfall and have recorded the highest number of rain days, in comparison to other months. During this period, the country normally experiences unsettled weather conditions with occasional heavy showers or thundershowers especially during the night until early morning.

2. Brunei Darussalam Weather Forecast
Unsettled weather condition is expected in the next few days due to the combination of cold surge and a low-pressure system near our country that leads to more moist atmospheric condition, and thus enhancing the development of rain clouds.

Active weather condition is expected from Thursday (21 December 2023) until Sunday (24 December 2023) with occasional heavy and thundery showers and wind gust may reach up to 50 km/h during or near heavy thundershowers.

Over Brunei waters, sea condition is generally at moderate to rough state, with wave height reaching up to 2.0 meters.

3. Our Advice
Members of the public are advised to take precautionary actions with respect to the forecasted active weather condition. There is a high risk of flash floods especially at low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near the river banks during continuous heavy rain and also during high tide. Risk of landslide and fallen trees are also possible during heavy showers and gusty condition. Sea state is dangerous to all small boat operations, sea recreational activities and sports.

Public, road users and fishermen are advised to always be up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department, and to take necessary actions to ensure safety.
